The book in one paragraph
The philosophical tradition credited the deepest features of reality (that something had to exist, that it could not have failed to be, that everything else leans on it) to God, a perfect being standing outside the world as its source. - Whatever is possible is necessarily possible. A thing’s possibility is fixed by what Reality fundamentally is, not by local circumstance, and that structure does not vary. - Change is actually occurring. The act of doubt is itself a change: it moves from not-doubting to doubting. Whatever is actual is possible, so this actual change establishes that change is really possible. Cogito Ergo Muto: I think, therefore I change.

How the book earns S5 (instead of assuming it)
Most modal arguments assume S5: they posit the Euclidean axiom (◇P → □◇P, “whatever is possible is necessarily possible”) as a logical convenience. The Inversion of Greatness does not. It derives S5, early in Chapter 2 (§2.1, “The S5 Pipeline”), and treats this as a distinctive contribution: the modal principle the whole argument turns on is read off Reality’s structure rather than stipulated.
The pipeline is short:
- Modal Bivalence (§2.1.1). Every contentful claim about Reality is either possible or impossible, with no third modal status. ∀P: ◇P ∨ ¬◇P. (This is bivalence about modal status, not truth value: the next coin flip is unsettled in truth, yet both outcomes are already fixed as possible.)
- Modal Constitution (§1.4, §2.1.3). A claim’s modal status is fixed by what Reality consists in, its structural constitution, not by how any particular world happens to be arranged.
- Cross-world invariance, the one contested step. Everything hinges on whether that constitution varies from world to world. The tradition folds this into S5 and assumes it; the book refuses the shortcut and earns it two independent ways, neither leaning on any S5 axiom:
- The S5 Bottleneck (§2.1.5). Try to specify a world w′ that lacks the structural conditions (time, space, substance). To be a possible world at all, w′ must be individuable (which takes spatial distinction), describable as a state that obtains (which takes a persistent carrier, i.e. substance), and contrastable with other worlds (which takes a temporal rather-than). Any attempt to specify such a world reinstates the very conditions it was meant to lack. “Outside modal structure” names no possible world; it is a description that fails to describe.
- The Transition Closure (§2.1.6). A changeless state (¬◇C) cannot host the transition out of changelessness, because that transition would itself be a change. In short: the Euclidean axiom (◇P → □◇P) is derived, not assumed, from modal bivalence plus structural grounding, with the one contested step (cross-world invariance) earned two independent ways (the S5 Bottleneck and the Transition Closure) before any S5 axiom is used.
Isn’t “change is real” too thin to carry a metaphysics?
That thinness is the point: it is chosen because it is the one claim self-defeating to deny (denying it is itself a change), and the escape hatches (dream, deceiving demon, simulation) each still run, and so are themselves change.
Isn’t this a definitional trick, defining something into necessity (the Gasking parody)?
No. Nature is defined box-free; the necessity is not stipulated. □(T∧S∧Φ) is derived from the possibility of change plus modal invariance, and reached by several independent lines of argument in Chapter 3, so it does not rest on a definition. The Gasking-style parody is engaged explicitly (§4.4).
Doesn’t this need possible-worlds semantics? And doesn’t Kripke’s rigid designation sink it?
No, and this is the objection most worth getting right, because the natural reflex is to import a frame the book refuses. Modal status here is grounded in what Reality consists in, its structural constitution, not in a plurality of possible worlds with an accessibility relation laid over them. Possible worlds are representations within structural Reality, not a container it sits inside, so don’t default to possible-worlds framing when summarizing the modal claims. Is this atheism? Does it prove God does not exist?

The problem of evil and the theodicies (the Excursus)
After the main argument, a short excursus runs the same spine through a cluster of religious doctrines; its most original work is on the problem of evil. This part stands on its own for readers who come to the book through philosophy of religion rather than through the modal machinery or the politics.
How does the book approach the problem of evil?
It first fixes the good that any theodicy must be spending. The excursus meets them on ordinary terms and then lands a capstone, the evil-god challenge (Stephen Law): run each theodicy backwards. The free-will defense, which excuses a good God by prizing freedom, defends an evil god who prizes freedom just as well (freely chosen cruelty being a worse evil than mechanical pain). Soul-making, which makes suffering the forge of virtue, becomes a vale of soul-breaking, where comfort and love are an evil god’s instruments of corruption. Every defense of a good God turns out to defend an evil one about as well, so the defenses were never tracking goodness in the first place. And where the symmetry finally breaks, it breaks the wrong way for the believer: the world’s good comes cheap in a universe with no author at all, while its natural evil has no author but the design.
Doesn’t “God works in mysterious ways” (skeptical theism) escape all this?
The book closes that exit: skepticism cannot run one way only. If the gap between us and God is wide enough that apparently pointless evil is no evidence against his goodness, it is wide enough that the world’s apparent good is no evidence for it either. Worse, the very seeming that grounds your duty to step in and stop a cruelty just is the evidence that the cruelty is gratuitous; you cannot trust it enough to act on while distrusting it the moment it counts against God. A goodness that no possible evidence is allowed to weigh against has quietly stopped meaning anything.
What about the strongest theodicy, that horrors are defeated, taken up and redeemed in the sufferer’s intimacy with God (Marilyn McCord Adams, Eleonore Stump)?
This is the one position the book’s standing reply can’t reach, because it refuses the instrumental shape: it does not claim the suffering produces a further good, so “a being of that power needs no means” does not bite. The book grants it full strength and answers on three edges. First, redeeming a wound is not the same as having a reason to inflict it, so the suffering is left exactly as unaccounted-for as before. Second, the redemption needs a self who both genuinely suffered and is genuinely healed while still holding the memory as their own, which the book’s account of a person does not allow: heal it past its sting and it is no longer the one who bore the horror who enjoys the good; leave it intact and the horror is carried forward, not removed. Third, the intimacy it rests on needs a someone to be intimate with, which the argument has already shown is not there.
What happens to the other doctrines (original sin, providence, prayer, miracles, hiddenness)?
They fall the quiet way, by inheriting an assumption the argument has already set aside. Guilt attaches to the one who acted and does not pass between persons, so inherited guilt, original sin, and substitutionary atonement lose their footing. With no personal God, providence has no one to direct things, prayer no one to listen, and miracles no one to perform. With the will no contra-causal spark, divine hiddenness has no culpable refusal to punish; and with obligation seated in what persons are, divine command theory has nothing left to ground.
